Poster for the victims in Thailand

We will be making a poster for the Victims of Thailand.

For several months, Thailand has been inundated with flood waters, requiring citizens to relocate and factories to close. The flooding began in July with tropical storms and unusually high monsoon rains. An estimated 2 million people have been affected by flooding, with more than 100,000 using shelters. The floods that have killed 427 people since July. There is constant threat of waterborne or communicable diseases as many families do not have access to running water or clean toilets. Like so many other Thai-Americans, This disaster has personally effected me directly. My own family in Bangkok has been relocated, and are unsure of when they will be able to return home, and are unsure of what kind of home will even be left. In the meantime, food and lodging is very expensive and scarce. Your donation will help to provide food and lodging for relocated flood victims in during these tough times. We have a direct link to those in need in Thailand, so you can be sure that your donation go to those in need.

Milwaukee Film Fest Opening Night Party

This Thursday’s Milwaukee Film Fest Opening night party at Discovery World is probably the closest Milwaukee will get to the red-carpet glamour of Hollywood. So, dress to impress, people.

The party goes from 8:30 p.m.–1 a.m., so if you plan on seeing the opening night film, Natural Selection (7 p.m. at the Oriental Theatre), don’t fret, you won’t miss any of the party. This year, organizers of the festival are kicking it up a notch to make it the signature celebration of the festival. A potpourri of performances will highlight individual films and reflect elements of this year’s festival.

In the Radio Milwaukee Sound Travels Tent, DJ Marcus Doucette will spin ‘60s music from France and India throughout the night. At 10:45 p.m., Sex & Cigarettes will ooze sultry French pop in honor of the ‘60s French music legend Serge Gainsbourg and the spotlight film Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life. Actually, the band is forming for this one performance only and is comprised of Milwaukee musicians you might have heard of: William Seidel (Decibully), Ryan Schleicher (Juniper Tar), Fran Switalski (The Flips), Austin Dutmer (Jaill), Jason Todd (Def Harmonic) and Matthew Gorski (Fresh Cut Collective). New York-based DJ Rekha will close the night with a Bhangra hip-hop dance party (yes, please) calling attention to the festival’s Passport: India program.

The Great Lakes Room will feature The Brew City Bombshells Burlesque at 10 p.m. – a nod to the closing night film, On Tour, and a Beauty Bar by Neroli should make you feel inclined to mimic their sassy Hollywood glamour.

In The Pilot House, check out DJ Dori Zori from WMSE as she hosts soundtrack trivia and screens trailers of films from the fest in the preview theatre, complete with hot, buttery popcorn. Also on display and available for sale will be eight limited-edition screen printed posters made by Milwaukee artists Kari Couture of Redline and Eric Hancock, Eric Von Munz, Dwellephant, Alyssa Schulte, Orchard Street Press and Francisco Ramirez of Bureau of Print Research and Design.

“There are so many amazing artists in Milwaukee and everyone’s willing to help out, so I asked all artists to pick a film and make a poster for it,” says Ghazal Sheei, party coordinator. “Even better, they were generous enough to donate the proceeds to Milwaukee Film.”

There were roughly 1,000 people in attendance last year and Sheei hopes for even more this year. “But it really isn’t a matter of how many people, it’s about the quality of the event and that people walk away having the best Thursday night possible,” she says. “That’s what I am focusing on.”

And in true Hollywood fashion, there will be (local) celebrities, film producers, actors and maybe a professional athlete or two – though no specific names have been revealed.

Here we have a poster for the Milwaukee Film Festival 2011. This is one of the movies I picked to make a poster for the event. Let me just say I love this movie. My first idea was to do something with the Flight 19.

But seemed a bit obscure for the film. Then I considered using the monkey from Barry's room.

While yes, I love monkey's; this monkey is a bit too creepy. But again I like monkeys. But this didn't work out. So next I went for the star of the movie. The mother-fucking mothership!!!

This is the first of hopefully many science fiction themed posters. So you ask how is this sci-fi? The idea that Germany won the space race before the USSR or the USA.

"The Space Race can trace its origins to Nazi Germany, beginning in the 1930s and continuing during World War II when Germany researched and built operational ballistic missiles. Starting in the early 1930s, German aerospace engineers experimented with liquid-fueled rockets, with the goal that one day they would be capable of reaching high altitudes and traversing long distances."

But say that Germany got to space first but didn't return back. This is the inspiration for this print.

Things got a bit silly. One morning around 4am I couldn't sleep.I got out of bed and started fiddling around with the idea of making a target print. So I started mix images and working for about 3 hours with a finish idea. A simple 2 color print on yellow paper. Showed it to my wife at 7 in the morning with a "great job , what is it?" look. The more I looked at it, I felt like it looked familiar. So I did a quick search and didn't find anything.

Then around 8am it hit me.

Third Man Records "Thug & Target" Print Set by Printmafia. I own this set of prints as well and just completely forgot about it. I love what PrinMafia does.

So it is different, I changed the paper and scale. And I also printed some one news print so it can be used as a real target. I guess you could use the one printed on the red paper too. But...

So the idea for this print was mostly because of the movie Tron and that allot of new friends have Cafe style motorcycles. So the idea was to make my own Tron print. But changed the idea right after I started. I combined the Tron Light Cycles with the influence of Cuban poster art.
Below are two of the light cycles from the movie Tron.

This why I choose the three colors for the print.

Toys in the Attic 2010 will take place @ GALLERY 122 this year. Gallery 122 is located @ 122 8th Street SE in Minneapolis [Map]
Opening Reception will be December 3th and will feature limited edition/signed and numbered prints and custom toys from Local and National artists benefiting Toys for Tots.
Guests are asked to help out children in need by bringing a new (unwrapped) toy* to the show. In return, you’ll get one** of the event official poster prints designed this year by Minneapolis artist DWITT.
*No military based toys such as guns, please / **While supplies last.
If you forget your toy, there is a suggested donation of $1-$5 at the door. All toys and door donations go directly to Toys for Tots.

For this poster I felt that The Arrivals needed a definite Chicago feel. So the first thing that came to my mind was the "L", mass transit rail system that is elevated; hence the "L". So the red line which travels both north and south through the city.

So my drying rack has come in. No more hanging prints from the ceiling of the basement.

I am now printing 125% faster rate. That's right, 125%. I think....

Behind the drying rack is our fridge with a keg of Oberon. Two of my favorite things at this moment.

The next poster is for a Jazz fest called OKKA Fest. OKKA Fest is part of a record label festival. OKKA Disk is that record label, they have a combination of jazz and experimental music. The venue is SugarMaple and also The Palm in Milwaukee. There are many artist playing this festival.

I came up with this simple idea for a Decibully poster but I didn't have my new vacuum table ready.

But I am finishing up the a new vac table that will be larger 40x30. I'll be able to hold down 25x19 sheets with no problem. Photos of that coming soon.

This is a poster for Finntroll.

Each are 19x8.5 ish on French Paper

Quick little history from this site.

Finntroll is an extreme metal & folk metal band from Helsinki, Finland. They combine elements of black metal, death metal, and folk metal with a type of Finnish folk music called Humppa. Finntroll's lyrics are mostly in Swedish, the only exception being the song "Madon Laulu" on Visor Om Slutet. Finntroll's first singer Katla decided to use Swedish over Finnish since he was part of a Swedish-speaking minority in Finland and the sound of the language seemed to better suit the band's "trollish" outfit. Despite several vocalist changes, this tradition has since been continued.

They are an interesting band for sure.

So I decided to make a poster for a band that I played in at one time. The Mashers, what can you say about the Mashers but to call them a "fucking rock band".

No cheesy haircuts, no fashion trends, shit gear but they made a huge sound and had fun playing. The pure sexual sounds and rhythms from guys you don't want to picture having any kind of sexual encounters are simply catchy and bombastic songs. With hits like "AssFreak", "Sex with Satan" how can you not, but be interested in this bunch of hard drinking gorillas that play music too.

Proof Ideas for the Invites

So the invites that I am working are for my wedding. Each invite will appear to look like a test print.

Here are some ideas of what I'll be printing.

So the basic idea is that I'll print on a larger sheet of paper and cut it down to 6 or 8 invites per tabloid piece of paper.

The back will have the info on the events to occur.

And it is. Four color 25x19 French paper. So the big question is... Why? First I think it's funny. But is very striking in person. Also with this print, I used only vellum sheets and they came out great. Plus I was able to add textures to the red, yellow and blue buy tearing the vellum and taping it back together. I'm happy with the print. Plus it only took a couple of hours to make. So that helped. Oh Three Floyds Gorch Fock helped the night before when I was designing this.

So it has been a while since I posted anything.
I got stagnant with work that I liked.

I have been reading allot of books and thinking of new designs.
Above is a poster idea for Apocalypse Hoboken w/ Millions.
Originally the idea was going to be Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon crossed with Charles Manson.

But it was not working out the way I wanted.
So this idea came to my head last night (above).
I like most of it, just need to work in the type.

So I made a simple swatch pack of some of my work to use for promotion. I'm really happy with the outcome.

Other things to enjoy. I tried twitter and didn't really like the way it works. It's just not what I want to do. Put a message on the internet every 5 minutes of random shit. But there are some great.

We all know who Glenn Danzig is right? Sure, muscles an black hair and about 5 foot 2. Anyhow... I'm not sure if this is really him or not. But it is amazing funny. But here is the first link to a pure comedy. Yes first. And here is the second link just as funny.

First is Edward R. Tufte's Visual Explanations: Images and Quantities, Evidence and Narrative (1997)
This is a book about information design. He seems to have a hard time getting some points across.

Next book.
Robert Adam and Carol Robertson's
Intaglio: The Complete Safety-First System For Creative Printmaking
This book gives a very detailed information on printing in a safe environment. The book gives good step by step for etching and great planning details for a print shop.

I have three other books to put up as well. Perhaps tomorrow.

Creating a 2-D with a 3-D Graphic Space.
This was able to come to fruition with the help of J. W. Lawson ( check his site here and his blog here). He was willing to sit down and explain the photo process with me. I like the way it came out. In my crit, people wanted to see it more as an installation piece rather than in a 2-D format. I say no thanks, I like the flatness of the image.
